چکیده
I take the opportunity that Froese, Gould, and Seth (this issue) provide to clarify further (see the special issue of this journal, 2011 Volume 18 number 1) some aspects of Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES; Hurlburt, 1993, in press; Hurlburt & Akhter, 2006; Hurlburt & Heavey, 2006) by distinguishing DES from the Explicitation Interview (EI) method (e.g. Vermersch 2009; Petitmengin 2006; Petitmengin & Bitbol 2009); and to comment on Froese and colleagues’ suggestion of the Double Blind Interview (DBI) as a way of evaluating DES, EI, and other methods. Pristine Inner Experience Here is a DES description. I choose this example because it is typical and at hand—I simply selected one from my most recent DES expositional interview 1 .

The Descriptive Experience Sampling method
Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) is a method for exploring inner experience. DES subjects carry a random beeper in natural environments; when the beep sounds, they capture their inner experience, jot down notes about it, and report it to an investigator in a subsequent expositional interview. DES is a fundamentally idiographic method, describing faithfully the pristine inner experiences of...
متن کاملInvestigating pristine inner experience: implications for experience sampling and questionnaires.
We argue that inquiring about directly apprehended ("pristine") inner experience requires four overlapping methodological characteristics: effectively limiting investigation to specific, clearly identified moments; effectively limiting investigation to pristine experience; bracketing presuppositions; and iteratively acquiring skills. We compare and contrast Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES)...
متن کاملPristine Inner Experience and Descriptive Experience Sampling: Implications for Psychology
Pristine inner experience is that which is directly present in awareness before it is distorted by attempts at observation or interpretation. Many psychological methods, including most introspective methods, attempt to measure some aspect of pristine inner experience (thoughts, feelings, mental imagery, sensations, etc.). We believe, however, that these methods produce unspecifiable combination...

Hurlburt and Schwitzgebel’s groundbreaking book, Describing Inner Experience: Proponent Meets Skeptic, examines a research method called Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES). DES, which was developed by Hurlburt and collaborators, works roughly as follows. An investigator gives a subject a random beeper. During the day, as the subject hears a beep, she writes a description of her conscious exp...
